Our Approach

Social Accessibility ™ Therapy is the keystone of our approach to helping isolated children improve the quality of their lives. The goal, of course, is for them to be less isolated.

Here's how it works.

1. Make socialization accessible
2. Reduce anxiety and confusion
3. Create authentic connections
4. Expand and generalize socialization skills

We get to know the child, and prepare them for one of our socialization groups. These groups of two to five compatible children provide a non-threatening environment where everyone feels comfortable.

At the outset, expectations are made clear to the children. This is done not out of a rigid sense of strictness, but rather to make the environment predictable and stress-free. The children know what to expect when they enter the room, where to sit during group activities, even how to leave the room when the session is over.

Within this structure we are quite flexible, always looking for "teachable moments" - opportunities for socialization that pop up naturally during the activities.

We have found that with enough repetition from week to week, the group becomes a comfort zone for the children, and eventually reaches a tipping point when an almost magical sense of connection occurs. It's at this point that new tasks can be introduced, slowly and deliberately, to teach children the socialization skills they need.
